Student Resources

How do we compete with all of the electronic entertainment with
today's kids? Capture their spirit of learning with these fun, interactive
sites. They're already on the Web, why not make it worthwhile. Follow
the helpful, quick overview of what to expect on each site, accompanied
by an easy access link.

Animals Myths and Legends
http://members.ozemail.com.au/~oban/
Oban the Knowledge Keeper has been around for a while, and he and his fellow storytellers take students through the world of myths and legends where they'll learn the importance of these stories to the Aboriginal peoples of Australia and other cultures. The story pages fit nicely on the screen and include some illustrations. The playroom offers coloring pages and a crossword.

Ask Earl
http://www.yahooligans.com/content/ask_earl
Each day, Earl answers a question posed by students. The answers are sometimes humorous, often educational, and provide links to related online resources. This could be a great way to start or end the school day.

Great Web Sites for Kids
http://www.ala.org/greatsites
This subject directory created by the American Library Association is a terrific site for your students to use when searching for information on the Internet.

Education 4 Kids
http://www.edu4kids.com
Features online flash cards, a math square game, and drills for math tables, time, and money. But there's more than math here. The site also features drills on social studies, language, and the table of elements. Fast loading for questions and answers enhances this site.

Enchanted Learning
http://www.enchantedlearning.com
This is a commercial site that has excellent resources for young students. Their Great Kids Pages includes information on diverse topics like Antarctica, the French Dictionary, and the Great Wall of China. There are also nursery rhymes, preschool activities, and much more.

Exploratorium
http://www.exploratorium.com
This may be one of the best websites period, educational or not. The online exhibits range from building scale models of the solar system to trying to hit a fastball, and all are educational. There's nothing else to say except you really should visit this site.

Fun School
http://www.funschool.com
Fun School offers free online games that are of some educational value, too. The games are divided by grade level, from preschool to 6th.

Funbrain
http://www.funbrain.com/kidscenter.html
Touching on mathematics, language arts, geography and culture. Funbrain presents free learning games for all ages. Additionally, they offer curriculum guides for teachers to use along with the games.

Homework Central
http://www.homeworkcentral.com
Divided into three sections (grades 1-6, middle and high school, college and beyond) this site is a categorical list (like Yahoo!) of websites. Designed to help students find more information about their homework subject — not to do their homework for them.

Mathematics with Alice
http://library.thinkquest.org/10977/
A trip through Algebra with Alice in Wonderland. Good site to direct students to. Especially notable is the problematic board.

National Geographic Society Xpeditions
http://www.nationalgeographic.com/xpeditions/
This site provides resources and learning experiences that conform to the national geographic standards. Users can interact with the exhibits and each other. The site also provides excellent links to a map collection and to related sites on the Web.
